The Special Care Unit at Pinewood Terrace focuses on residents with Alzheimer's Disease and other related dementias. The staff members in the SCU are specially trained in the " Gentle Care Approach." This means that residents are encouraged to follow the patterns of their earlier life, rising when they awaken naturally, rather than being rousted out of bed at the crack of dawn; being assisted to perform activities that they did as younger people - things like setting the table before meals, and clearing the dishes when the meal is over, folding clothes, singing the songs they remember from their past, and being part of a family of caring people. Residents in the SCU are encouraged and assisted to live life to the fullest, and they are also supported physically and emotionally as their abilities decrease. The SCU is a secured unit, with its own dining rooms, outdoor courtyard area, and special activities programs. But that doesn't mean the residents are stuck behind closed doors. They have the opportunity to leave the unit whenever they choose, and are encouraged to go out for activities such as a weekly bus trip, fishing in the summertime, and touring the countryside to see the autumn leaves or the Christmas decorations in the winter. SCU residents' family members receive encouragement and assistance from the staff to help them be as involved in their family members' lives as they wish to be. Family members often find support and encouragement from one another as well, as they develop relationships with other visitors to the Special Care Unit. SCU Rates: |
