Enhanced Dining Opportunities

Clarkston Care Center has transitioned from the standard 3 meal pattern to Enhanced Dining Opportunities. This concept has resulted in five meals being offered throughout the day, rather than three meals typical in long-term care facilities. In addition, diets are liberalized with minimal restriction, rather than the strict therapeutic diets historically used.

The American Dietetic Association fully supports these changes occuring at Clarkston Care Center. The appetite of an elderly resident is often diminished, and three large meals per day can be overwhelming.

Frequent meals are better suited to maximize caloric intake.

Breafast will be offered to everyone at 7:30am.

Lunch will be available at 11:30am.

Dinner will be served at 5:00pm and all elders will be taken to their respective dining areas to enjoy these three main meals.

Snacks will be offered at 1:30 and 7:30pm and will consist of high calorie/protein options from which to choose.

Note that this meal pattern is especially appropriate for the diabetic resident, allowing for carbohydrate intake to be dispersed throughout the day, aiding in blood glucose normalization.

In regards to liberalization of therapeutic diets, this concept is fully supported by the American Dietetic Association for the following reasons:

Enhanced calorie/nutrient intake. Improved appearance and flavor of food.
Improvement in ability to maintain acceptable weight.

Happy, healthy and satisfied elders.
